A Day at Home of Hope…

Some of our friends, this time decided to spend a day with people who are underprivileged (economically and hence socially!). So we decided to visit Home of Hope in Bangalore.

Before we talk about the day, let me introduce Hope Of Hope.

In the midst of a lot of privileges (economically and hence socially), most of us are busy chasing things we really don’t need in life; some of us start thinking about the reality of life but don’t know what to do; a few of us support financially for social causes without bothering about the end result; a very few of us find dedicated time in a consistent manner and respond to social needs for our fellow human…and very rarely one emerges to dedicate life to them – Auto Raja is one such soul! On a contrary, he was not enjoying all the so-called privileges of an urban life, (maybe) hence, he responded to the needy on the streets. He started accommodating such people suffering from unbelievable anguish, in his own small house, way back in 1997 under the name ‘New Ark Mission India (NAMI)’. He wanted to provide them, at least the basic needs – food, shelter, clothes and medicine; on top of all – some dignity in life…at least a respectful death!! Hence Home of Hope!

Today, it has 3 different wings – for men, for ladies and for kids – and almost 750 inhabitants!!! They all enjoy a better life at Home of Hope, with new little hopes in life!

We reached there in the morning and visited the ladies wing first.

We spend time talking to some of them. Many of them are physically and mentally ill and were thrown to the hard test in the streets….different stories of family and social brutality they faced before reaching Home of Hope.

We next visited kids wing. Kids were playing as it is a no school day! Some kids were disabled and need help to even move around. Many of them came to us and they wanted us to talk, carry them and play with them….Yeah, they don’t get that on an everyday basis! We distributed some snacks for them and spent some time with them.

We had arranged special lunch for all the friends in Hope of Hope. Along with Home of Hope team, we distributed lunch. We started lunch distribution at Men’s wing. Some students from a nearby college also joined us. There were more than 300 men of different ages at Men’s wing. Same story as Ladies wing – physically and mentally changed, some of them even can’t respond or eat food by themselves.

We joined in serving food for Ladies and kids later.

We ensured to reserve some snacks for their evening tea.

Smiling faces….it left some nice feeling in all of us when we returned. Hats off to Auto Raja and Team Home of Hope! Thanks to my friends and my lil boys who joined and spent the whole day together with them!

A day with some differences….and also a thought – we must do better in a consistent way!

…and finally…!

It is almost a year back, I posted a blog about Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and the sad situation of his burial site. [The old blog is here: “Remembrance is gratitude!”]

Thanks to those who supported and made his memorial a reality today. It is a tiny gift from Indians to that great soul!

Eid Mubarak!

Shawwal Hilal appeared!

Divine Ramadan month commemorated the first revelation, through a month long divine fasting and ‘giving’ (zakat). It is completed.

[First revelation of Quran to Prophet Muhammad by archangel Gabriel in 610AD at Hira Cave near Makkah.].

Now it is the time for celebration!

Let us celebrate Eid al-Fitr (“feast of breaking of the fast”)…

Eid Mubarak, dear friends!

Get-together, Sharing and Happiness around.

Let it spread across the world, beyond the borders of religion, color and places!

Do you know? The first day of Shawwal (or day of Eid al-fitr), is the only day in Shawwal, Muslims are *not* allowed to fast!

So, no human should go hungry without food today! Let us do our bit for it as a positive gesture along with wishing and celebrating Eid al-fitr!

Keep Smiling, Keep Shining and Stay Blessed! 🙂

Notes: | Shawwal : tenth month of the lunar Islamic calendar | Hilal : Indicates the crescent moon, which signifies the start of a Lunar Month | Eid al-Fitr: celebrated at the beginning of Shawwal month, and completion of the divine month of Ramadan | Eid Mubarak : Wishing a Blessed Celebration (Eid=Celebration, Mubarak=Blessed) | Zakat : Charity, sharing to poor/needy. | Five Pillars of Islam: Shahada-Faith, Salat-Prayer, Zakat-Charity, Sawn-Fasting, Hajj-Pilgrimage to Mecca (some changes between Sunni Islam and Shia Islam) |

Helping makes you happier?

helphappiness

My answer is Yes! When you help a needy person, your heart gets activated with positive energy. I believe, when you do something good for others, you feel good and become happier, esp when it gives smiles to others!

Happened to see a research report from Oxford University on this topic “Effect performing acts of kindness  on the well being of the actor” (Detailed report here). In the conclusion, they mention as

Helping others makes you happy, but the effect is relatively modest.”

The report derives(from available data) that, though it makes you happy, the effect is not very high or significant! Also they just left saying, more research based on the type of help could give more accurate results. They used some specific set of other studies and data for their analysis.

However, from personal experiences and what I hear from others, the moments where you become a reason (whatever small) for some other to smile, your heart becomes compassionate and feels so happy. Also it refreshes your brain. Overall it makes you bright! So I believe, helping or doing something good (based on the result), makes you happier and the impact is not just moderate, rather, it is significant on your heart and brain. It adds a lot of harmony to you your life!

One point is important, you need to be aware what you are doing. Example, if you simple arrange a fixed money every month to some social support activities, OR, you give some financial support without knowing the cause or the details of the purpose, you may not feel much. Because, you ‘just give’ money and not really aware how it helps someone. (or don’t care?!). However, being aware on the support that you give, to whom and how it helps, is entirely a different situation. This awareness (is not really to make you proud), makes you more effective in doing better such actions, also, it makes you happier.

The help does not need to be only financial! The help does not need to be big! The help need not be only to outsiders (to your family)! Just think, how to make others smile, when they are unable to!

So, IMO, making others smile gives you more smiles; smiles from top! It has the power to perfume the whole world! 🙂

Wanna try? Why don’t you try today/tonight? 🙂

Spread Smiles, Keep Smiling, Keep Shining!
